Deutsche Bank Research is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Japan Rates Strategist to join our team in Tokyo. This individual will play a crucial role in providing in-depth analysis and strategic insights into the Japanese fixed income markets, with a particular focus on the unique dynamics of institutional investors. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise to identify market opportunities, assess risks, and effectively communicate their views to a diverse, global client base.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Deep Dive into Japanese Institutional Investor Behavior: Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the liabilities, regulatory frameworks, and investment behaviors of Japanese life insurance companies and banks. This includes analyzing their asset allocation strategies, hedging practices, and responses to market and policy changes.
  • Supply-Demand analysis of the Japanese Government Bond market
  • Strategic Market Insights: Generate high-quality research reports, presentations, and commentaries on Japanese fixed income markets, including government bonds, interest rate derivatives, and related instruments.
  • Client Engagement: Effectively communicate complex market views and strategic recommendations to internal stakeholders (e.g., sales, trading) and external clients, both verbally and in written form.
  • Global Monetization: Contribute to monetizing insights and analysis for clients outside of Japan, leveraging strong English communication skills to reach an international audience.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other research teams, sales, and trading desks to ensure a holistic view of the market and to facilitate the timely delivery of actionable insights.
  • Flexibility on Macro: While a strong understanding of macroeconomics is a plus, the primary focus of this role is on rates strategy driven by micro-level institutional behavior.

Your skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable expertise in understanding the liabilities, regulatory environment, and investment behavior of Japanese life insurance companies and banks.
  • Knowledge of the Japanese cross-currency market would be a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, suitable for a global audience.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive and inquisitive mindset, with a passion for financial markets.

Education/ Qualifications

  • Fluency in Japanese for engaging with local stakeholders and fluency in English for engaging with international investors.
  • A solid understanding of macroeconomic principles and their impact on fixed income markets.
  • Prior experience in analysing the Japan Rates market or coverage of the Financial Services sector from an Equity Research perspective would be an advantage
  • Advanced degree in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field.
