Department Profile
The Finance Division reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 3,000 employees worldwide. Finance protects the Morgan Stanley franchise by serving as guardian of the Firm’s books and records, and by contributing to firm wide risk management and risk reduction. This division maintains relationships with Morgan Stanley’s various industry and government regulators, and also serves as the conduit of financial information to the outside investment community. Finance plays a critical role as advisor to Morgan Stanley’s various businesses and its senior management team.
Global Corporate Controllers (GCC) is responsible for overseeing the accounting, financial and regulatory reporting for the Firm. GCC prepares external financial reports for public filings and regulators. For internal reporting, GCC along with Business Unit Controllers and Financial Planning and Analysis, summarizes, plans and forecasts the organization’s financial position, including income statement, balance sheet and analyses of future revenues, expenses and earnings. Within GCC, the Legal Entity Control Group (LECG) is responsible for legal entity governance, control and reporting.
Role Description
We are seeking a Legal Entity Controller (LEC) to support Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC (MSCO), our primary US institutional broker-dealer, and Prime Dealer Services Corp. (PDS), a subsidiary of MSCo, engaged in securities lending transactions to facilitate financing for our Prime Brokerage clients.
The Director role has a focus on, but is not limited to, financial reporting (including monthly FOCUS reporting, quarterly regulatory reporting and other supplementary reporting). The Director will be heavily involved in preparing US GAAP financial statements on a semi-annual and annual basis.
Much of the reporting to support the abovementioned activities is provided by our Finance Shared Services (FSS) team in Mumbai. As such, the LEC team focuses on analysis, understanding key drivers, and providing audience-appropriate commentary and explanations. A successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of the broker-dealers’ activities and how they are reflected in the financials. This will include business, funding, capital and liquidity drivers.
In addition to financial reporting, the Director will participate in LEC and business led initiatives, determine the financial reporting impacts of new product initiatives (NPAs), support numerous ad-hoc financial analyses, and help tackle ad-hoc issues. The Director will collaborate across Finance teams including Product Control, Regulatory Control, Accounting Policy, and Treasury, and other functional groups.
Responsibilities
The Director will support the LEC team meet a wide range of deliverables, including:
- Monthly financial deliverables to perform appropriate due diligence before FOCUS filing
- Annual audited financial statements and semi-annual unaudited statement of condition
- Quarterly regulatory filings and various supplementary schedules
- Monthly Risk/ALCO meetings / Quarterly Board materials
- Regulatory engagement – meeting materials; answering questions
- Audit engagement – internal and external
- Maintenance of effective internal controls; escalation of control issues
- P&L and balance sheet analyses; numerous ad-hoc pro-formas
- Stakeholder and relationship management across Finance and other functional teams
Qualifications / Skills required
- Effective communicator – able to tailor the appropriate message for the audience and context, whether verbally, in writing or in PowerPoint
- Solid problem-solving skills – logically thinks through challenges and issues, gathers relevant data, confers with others, and proposes potential solutions
- Strong data analysis skills – comfortable dealing with large amounts of complex inter-related data sets to solve problems and distill insights
- Self-starter - can receive high-level direction and take action; learns quickly from subject matter experts, following their own curiosity, and from scouting out other useful information sources
- Team player with good relationship building and influencing skills
- 4+ years of public/private experience with financial and/or regulatory reporting
- Strong understanding of and experience in US GAAP financial reporting
- Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA preferred
Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $90,000 and $155,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
