Morgan Stanley is seeking a Developer Advocate to accelerate technology modernization by working hands-on with developers from across the bank to enable their successful migration off legacy platforms onto specific modern alternatives and leveraging the experience gained in the process to collaborate with the modern platform teams on improving their products.

The Modernization Fleet aims to aid developers in increasing their productivity by supporting their adoption of modern technologies that avoids future hygiene activities, architectures that adhere to the technology principals, platforms that reduce cognitive load on developers, and adoption of modern practices that optimizes software delivery.

What will you be doing?

· Working hands-on with client teams outside ETS to help them achieve their modernization objectives through adoption of modern patterns

· Building illustrative example code projects to demonstrate particular modernization technologies and techniques in a format useful to clients (code + supporting docs)

· Advising clients on effective modernization strategies particular to their current situation, leveraging existing modernization patterns

· Collaborating with clients throughout their modernization journey, ensuring clear and timely sharing of relevant information

· Using feedback from client engagement to help drive creation and evolution of new sustainable modernization patterns for at-scale deployment

· Representing feedback from client engagement at ETS platform team customer councils to help ensure ETS platforms and their roadmaps benefit from improvements gained via client / adopter insights

What we’re looking for:

· Familiar with at least two of the firm's primary programming languages: Java; JavaScript/TypeScript; Python; C#; C++; Go - modern release versions strongly preferred

· Familiar with common developer CI/CD build tooling, including source to image concepts and confident making changes in such build tools

· Familiar with modern front-end development, including any of React, Angular or Vue

· Cloud & modern on-prem infrastructure tooling such as:

o Terraform

o At least one of: Docker; Podman; Buildah

o Kubernetes - ideally one of AKS, EKS or OpenShift. Including concepts such as state management and storage

o Service Mesh

o Flux (or Argo)

o Familiar with the concepts of an observability & telemetry stack

· Knowledge of Linux at least to a basic level

· Knowledge of application configuration management and automation tools such as ansible

· Familiar with Agile working practices and having past experience of any of the popular Agile tracking tools (such as jira for example)

· Awareness and understanding of the 12 factor model and the reasoning behind it, comfortable with the concepts of microservice architecture design

· DevOps mindset and understanding of SRE techniques, including stability and chaos engineering patterns.

· Someone who enjoys spending time sharing and discussing ideas with technologists in community settings such as guilds

Skills that will help you in the role:

· Strong written communication skills, an ability to accurately communicate complex details with clarity

· An ability to create simple & clear visual diagrams where relevant

· A drive to continually learn new skills and keep technical skillset current

· Ability to negotiate modernization efforts with development teams who have conflicting priorities

This role is based at the Glasgow Morgan Stanley office on Waterloo Street.
