We're seeking someone to join our Internal Audit team as an Executive Director reporting to the Head of Second Line of Defense Non-Financial Risk (2LOD NFR) Audit. The successful candidate will serve as the Compliance Subject Matter Expert and Compliance Risk Stripe Owner responsible for formulating Firmwide and 2LOD compliance risk views and messaging and designing and implementing the Global Audit Compliance Audit Coverage Strategy across 1st and 2nd Line audit teams.

The Internal Audit Division (IAD) drives attention and resources to vulnerabilities by providing an independent and well-informed view and impactful messages about the most important risks facing our Firm. This is accomplished by performing a range of assurance activities to independently assess the quality and effectiveness of Morgan Stanley’s system of internal control, including risk management and governance systems and processes. IAD serves as an objective and independent function within the Firm’s risk management framework to foster continual improvement of risk management processes. This is an Executive Director level position within Internal Audit’s coverage of the 2LOD Compliance Function , which is responsible for inspecting controls in front, middle and back offices.

What you'll do in the role:

Compliance Risk Stripe Owner (RSO)

  • Serve as the Compliance RSO and SME across IAD on compliance and audit matters.

  • Assess the appropriateness of the risk assessment universe and risk assessment ratings for applicable compliance risks.

  • Assess and confirm the appropriateness of the scope and inspection techniques for risk stripe related audits.

  • Work with respective audit teams to assess the severity of gaps and the appropriateness of remediation plans for identified observations that could lead to High or Critical issues.

  • Collect continuous monitoring updates across other IAD teams to formulate a view on enterprise-wide compliance risk, and confirm the appropriate specific risk stripe message for external communication.

Compliance Assurance Coverage

  • Identify risk and emerging risks applicable to Compliance coverage area and prioritize assurance plan and activities accordingly.

  • Design, build and maintain a risk-focused Compliance assurance coverage strategy across all lines of business and the U.S. Banks

  • Determine coverage approach across 2LOD Compliance and coach and support team in identifying the most appropriate inspection techniques based on the identified risks.

  • Convey increasingly complex risks and impact in a clear, concise, and timely manner to senior stakeholders.

  • Manage and support Compliance team in the adoption of new assurance tools and techniques.

  • Identify and leverage a range of relevant data sources to generate insights on risks and to facilitate discussions about the implications for the Firm.

  • Work with the Head of 2LOD NFR Audit and Advanced Analytics & Innovation to enhance analytics, automation and innovation supporting the execution of the audit plan and streamlining audit processes.

  • Enable the Compliance team to deliver high-quality work and navigate through peak work periods and deadlines.

  • Act as a key point of contact with internal and external stakeholders including regulatory authorities during interactions or examinations of compliance risk.

  • Work closely with legal, regulatory, and operational teams to address audit issues.

  • Oversee resource utilization, monitoring, and progress against targets.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • At least 12 years' relevant experience would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role.

  • Extensive knowledge of Compliance coverage, including complex risks, emerging risks, and relevant regulations

  • Deep understanding of audit principles and various assurance techniques

  • Ability to articulate complex risks in a clear and concise manner and guide team in their communication.

  • Ability to provide effective coaching, real-time feedback, and stretch and development opportunities to help team achieve success.

  • Ability to create a work environment that fosters trust, idea sharing, and inclusion among team members.

  • Significant experience overseeing resource utilization and monitoring progress against deliverables.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $220,000 and $280,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
