Job Description

What is the opportunity?

  • Working within the RBC European Law Group based in London, reporting to the European Head of Legal for Capital Markets and Wealth Management.
  • As Managing Counsel, European Law Group – ECM and Advisory, you will provide legal services and support to RBC’s Global Investment Banking team in Europe focussed on M&A, equity capital markets and other private side businesses.

What will you do?

  • Act as the senior relationship manager for Law Group in Europe as it relates to RBC Capital Markets’ ECM and M&A businesses as well as other private side/ Global Investment Banking businesses.
  • Deliver specialized and creative legal advice, demonstrating expert knowledge in highly specialized and complex areas of the law and having a high level of commitment to providing exceptional service to the European businesses and functions in a timely and innovative manner.
  • Provide legal and regulatory advice to support the broader strategic and operational goals of RBC Capital Markets in the UK and Europe.
  • Identify and help manage risks, and advise applicable businesses and functions of anticipated changes in legal requirements affecting their operations.
  • Attend applicable business and functional committees as required either directly or as a delegate.
  • Proactively translate legal, reputational, regulatory and other risks into business reality, devise action plans and engage in timely, coordinated and decisive risk management and crisis prevention.
  • Ensure the enhancement and development of Law Group processes across European business lines to ensure consistency of approach to legal advice, delivery of the highest levels of service and implementation of robust processes for centralising and memorialising advice.
  • Manage the activities of external counsel to identify the optimal resources for resolving issues and managing the quality and cost of the external services.
  • Participate as appropriate in industry discussions and thought leadership on UK and European regulations and guidance to promote a RBC’s perspective on interpretation of new and draft laws and align industry approaches.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Qualified lawyer with extensive post-qualification experience
  • Proven business/industry expertise with in-depth, specialized knowledge and experience of UK and European rules and regulations impacting RBC’s Capital Markets business.
  • Experience working in large cross-jurisdictional teams, collaborating on cross border transactions, coordinating on cross jurisdictional requirements and successfully implementing change and other key projects and initiatives.
  • High level of commitment to providing exceptional service to the European businesses and functions in a timely and innovative manner.
  • Strong inter-personal and analytical skills with attention to detail. Excellent written and communication skills. IT skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook and other applications.
  • Highly motivated, pro-active and efficient team player who contributes to the continuous improvement of the Law Group. Results oriented, well organized and with ability to prioritize, impact and influence.
  • French/ German/ Spanish language may be beneficial but not essential.
