What is the opportunity?
The Senior Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Compliance function that oversees Personal Banking, Commercial Banking & Regulatory Change in Canada and Personal Banking in the Caribbean. While managing a high performing team of Compliance professionals, the Senior Director is responsible for overseeing Compliance with consumer protection and other regulatory requirements in manner that is consistent with RBC’s Regulatory Compliance Management Framework, strategic objectives and risk appetite, all while promoting a strong culture of ethics, compliance and integrity.
What will you do?
- Lead the Compliance function that provides independent oversight of Personal Banking and Commercial Banking in Canada and Personal Banking in the Caribbean (the “Segments”) with respect to consumer protection, business conduct and market conduct related regulatory requirements.
- Lead the Compliance function that provides cross segment support for Regulatory Change in Canada which includes the identification, assessment and tracking of the status of regulatory change in Canada.
- Ensure that the Compliance function is following sound compliance risk management practices that are consistent with RBC’s Regulatory Compliance Management framework to identify, assess, prioritize and communicate compliance risks. This includes but is not limited to compliance risk management practices relating to issues management, risk assessments, monitoring and testing, and regulatory change.
- Partner with RBC leaders and senior management to ensure regulatory and policy matters are well understood and actively managed; in particular, proactively assist management in identifying, addressing and integrating compliance risk management practices into the business, ensuring that compliance breaches and failures are identified and resolved on a timely basis and that controls are working as intended.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships, credibility and reputation with regulators.
- Support business partners in achieving business objectives in a manner that effectively manages regulatory compliance risks.
- Lead a high performing Compliance team that will assist the Senior Director in fulfilling the responsibilities under Regulatory Compliance Management.
- Responsible for setting strategic priorities and annual objectives.
- Develop high quality talent to ensure a strong succession pipeline as well as adequate and qualified resources for executing the group’s mandate.
- Develop strong but independent relationships with business partners.
- Provide a regular independent assessment to senior management and applicable subsidiary board of directors on the effectiveness and adequacy of regulatory compliance practices and controls with the Segments; this also includes reporting on the status of implementing regulatory change and remediating compliance issues.
- Ensure timely escalation and reporting of material and emerging compliance risks to senior management.

Must have
- Knowledge of consumer banking products, applicable regulations and compliance risk management practices
- Demonstrated ability to work strategically and build a high performance culture
- Leads with integrity; can mobilize others through authentic personal leadership and acting in keeping with RBC values of service, teamwork, responsibility, diversity and integrity; abide by code of conduct and set the right leadership tone
- 15+ years of relevant experience
- Experience dealing with regulators
- Experience managing a large team
- Experience with compliance risk management practices
